Zone Ranger (Atari 5200, 1984)

About this product

Product Information

Borrowing elements of play from Sinistar, Asteroids, Defender and Time Pilot, Zone Ranger is a colorfully detailed space shooter with potential. Players fly around the screen, blasting away at space rocks and satellites while avoiding contact with these and other enemies. The object is to destroy 16 satellites within a time limit to advance to the next level. Unfortunately, a number of annoyances mar the experience.

Satellites fire even after they have been destroyed, warping to level seven (the only level you can warp to) always changes the player's score to exactly 7,500, and there's no display showing how many satellites remain in each of the 30 levels. Worse, the maze-like Inner Sanctum sequence, which involves collecting dots, is a colossal bore. In a noble attempt to create a shooter with depth, the designer instead fashioned one that is merely convoluted.
